Daniel and Timm McBride searched for a place that offered both sophistication and culture, yet spared them from the chaos and commotion of a bustling metropolis. Upon discovering Portugal, they realized it was the perfect place for them. After spending a few months in Lisbon, the vibrant capital, the couple found themselves drawn to Almada, a quaint city nestled on the opposite side of the river. Compared to Lisbon, Almada offered tranquility and a lesser degree of congestion. Additionally, the couple loved that they could reach the city with a mere ten-minute ferry ride. Dan McBride is a father, husband, singer, and dog lover. He was born in Hayward, California and raised in Boise, Idaho. After high school, he had a career as an electrical contractor for over 20 years. He then earned Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees at Boise State University, and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Pacific University. Next, Dan practiced medicine as a Physician Assistant, primarily in pain management, in Washington, Oregon, and California. His most recent accomplishments were retiring in 2021 and moving from Palm Springs California to Portugal with his husband Timm and dog Bubba. Dan’s 2023 book “So You Want to Move to Portugal - Your Ultimate Guide to Retiring in Portugal” shares tips they learned in that process. Dan’s interests include singing, cars, travel, cooking, home improvement and writing. He has spent many years singing in men’s choruses.
Timm McBride was born and raised in Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic design with a minor in business administration from Central Michigan University.
After college, he moved to Los Angeles to work in fashion retail and manufacturing. He then moved to Portland, Oregon and worked for Pendleton Woolen Mills before transitioning to real estate. After the financial crash of 2008, he returned to school and became a certified cosmetologist. Tim worked in the beauty industry until 2019 when he became a fund development manager for a theater company in Palm Springs, California. However, the pandemic led him to being out of work for 19 months.
The couple met at a dance in Portland and married shortly thereafter in Victoria, British Columbia. Both of them agreed to move to Palm Springs, and following the pandemic, they were united in their plans for retirement and creating a home overseas.
In almost 20 years, they have remodeled and flipped several homes.
In their new life, Tim joined a gym while Dan practices yoga, taking advantage of the affordability compared to the costs in the US. They decided against owning a car and prefer to walk everywhere. They have also joined various expat groups that meet for coffee, dinners, or socializing over a glass of wine. These gatherings provide diverse experiences and connections with people from different countries and backgrounds, which Tim believes wouldn't be possible in the US.
