Have you ruled out living in Europe due to its high price tag? You may want to check out Bulgaria. It has a low cost of living, welcoming locals, authentic culture, a low crime rate and provides a great launching point for hopping over to other European countries. Richard Barbree and Rumyana Marcheva moved to Pravets, Bulgaria and are loving it. The only thing they seem to be missing is Pop-Tarts!
Richard Barbree was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Grew up in Ohio. He attended Ohio State University.
While attending Ohio State, he joined the Ohio Air National Guard as a member of the 166 Tactical Fighter Squadron in Columbus, Ohio. He then served in the Ohio & Georgia Air National Guard, as well as the United States Air Force Reserves for over thirty-three years and retired at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His focus was in radar operations & intelligence. Thereafter he took a teaching position in Albany, Georgia. Richard married, divorced, and has 2 children who are now in the Atlanta, GA area working in healthcare and business fields.
And upon retirement, he continued teaching in international schools in Kuwait (for eight years) & China (for one year).
During his time in Kuwait, he met Rumyana Marcheva who is Bulgarian and they married. He has a stepson with Rumyana who is working in the Netherlands in finance. He retired from teaching internationally a few years ago and moved to Pravets, Bulgaria.
During retirement, Richard and Rumyana have been enjoying traveling around the world (except during the pandemic, which they hope to continue in the near future). He is hoping to start playing golf again, attending local festivals and enjoying their free time at home which, by the way, is located at a golf resort.
