Dawn Fleming was born and raised in Minnesota. She received a degree in anthropology from the University of Minnesota. After college, Dawn’s first husband went on to medical school and then the couple moved to Irvine, California. The couple split not long after moving to California, and Dawn enrolled at Western State University Law School. After graduating from law school, Dawn worked in real estate, international business law, and was a mentor to thousands of entrepreneurs. In 2003, she married her second husband Tom Clifford.
Dawn and Tom began their traveling lifestyle in 2010 when they sailed through the Panama Canal from California to Florida. During their 5,000 mile sailing trip, the couple found a new direction in life. At ages 50 and 60, they knew it was probably too late to accumulate that “magic number” in their bank account for retirement. Instead, they moved to Isla Mujeres, Mexico and found a simpler, happier and richer life at a fraction of the cost of living in the U.S. After being continuously asked how they could do it too, Dawn launched a podcast: the Overseas Life Redesign to share the wealth of inspirational stories from people she’s met who are living their dream outside the US. Dawn then wrote a book about retirement, titled Claim Your Dream Life: How to Retire in Paradise on a Shoestring Budget.
