Martin J. Smith, is an award-winning journalist, magazine editor, and the author of five crime novels and five nonfiction books. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and educated at Penn State University, Martin’s career eventually took him to Southern California, where he spent 31 years as a newspaper reporter, columnist, senior editor of the Los Angeles Times Magazine, and editor-in-chief of Orange Coast Magazine in Orange County. Since moving to Granby, Colorado (pop. 2,000) in 2016, he has continued to write magazine articles and books. His most recent nonfiction book, “Going to Trinidad: A Doctor, a Colorado Town, and Stories From an Unlikely Gender Crossroads,” was a finalist for a 2021 Colorado Book Award and was long-listed for a Reading the West Book Award from the Mountain and Plains Independent Booksellers Association. He has just completed a new novel and finished a two-year stint as president of Habitat for Humanity of Grand County, where he remains a volunteer and board member. He and Judy are the proud parents of two grown children.
