Our guests are Suzanne Nam and John Brown. Suzy arrived in Bangkok almost 16 years ago to work as a newspaper reporter. Since then, she's traveled all over the country and the region. As for Bangkok, she knows the city's popular attractions in and out but really enjoys exploring the nooks and crannies that make the capital city so alluring. She's watched the city grow into a truly cosmopolitan, top tier city and is proud to call it her home.
Suzy and John met during her first year in Bangkok. They adopted a street dog, Sam, and shortly after had twins. Raising children in a foreign country brings plenty of adventures and challenges, including navigating preschool drop off during one of the city's many political demonstrations, but daily life is surprisingly stable and comfortable.
Suzy was born in Queens, NY and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She attended Northeastern University for her undergrad and Boston College for her law degree. She practiced corporate law and pursued a journalism degree at Columbia University. Thereafter, Suzy switched from law to writing and journalism. She has worked in London, the Middle East and Asia. In her first year there, she worked as a newspaper reporter, which provided the opportunity to explore the country's culture, scenery, and food. Since then, she has written for numerous news publications and occasionally gives interviews on international radio and TV news programs. She is also a reporter for Forbes magazine and a former writer for TripSavvy, a site for which she authored 64 articles on Thailand travel. Suzy authored a number of guidebooks about travel in the country. Her interests include writing, reading, tennis, sewing, 3D printing, many other things, too!
We should note that Suzy has not yet retired but has lived abroad for 15+ years with her husband and raising their 2 children overseas. So, will they retire to Thailand? We shall see!
John Brown, Suzy’s husband, holds an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. He runs an online travel company out of Thailand. An interesting note is John also served in the Peace Corps - like our guests from the Durham, North Carolina episode. So cool! Unfortunately, John is away on business and unable to join us today
